Let me explain:īarbacuá was the only type of secado / drying process prior to 1990.īarbacuá secado subjects the yerba to 24 hours drying in rotating tube dryer getting the heat directly from the end of a long chimney of a huge oven-like fireplace in which a huge log fire is kept going strong it's plenty smokey in the dryer. South American materos rightly be calling yerba mate which was not Barbacuá-dried "unsmoked" yerba mate. It seems the Americans who formed ECOTEAS company, (or maybe it was the Americans who formed the Guayaki company), ignorantly started using the term "unsmoked" to refer to 100% smoke-free yerba. Unsmoked means one thing to South Americans and another to the rest of the world. They no longer sell their "San Mateo" variety which was a smoke-free yerba. Guayaki Traditional Organic Yerba Mate, an American company, is not unsmoked. I got a huge sample bag of the GoYerbaMate Premium Organic Yerba Mate with stems (for $3 USD), it was very smooth and good tasting, but for me, bland.ĮCOTEAS - Organic Yerba Mate Loose Tea Traditional Cut is 100% Smoke Free, and Certified Organic. (Also sold on Amazon under GoYerbaMate brand name.) based in USA has their house brand Premium Organic Yerba Mate (one with pure leaf one and one with stems) 100% Smoke Free, 100% Certified Organic, No Dust, From Brazil. i have only tried and am about to start my second kilo of Yacuy Organica Evra-Mate verde - (it's good and true Chimarrão.) The owner of Yacuy replied to my inquiry with: “All the mate that we produce, THEY DO NOT contact with combustion products in the zapecado and dryer processes!” Yacuy yerba mate makes a bunch of yerbas and i noticed they have an aged traditional yerba mate. I have tried to find out who the 15 other brands are that Cuatro Caminos performs drying, grinding and packaging services for by emailing them but got no reply. i bought two 500 g boxes of it once off a seller on Amazon but the boxes he sold me (and also a friend, too) were almost at expiration date and the yerba had gone bad - it was super dried out, no smell to speak of, and no taste when brewed, and a very bad taste when brewed super strong. I don't know the taste of Cuatro Caminos Organica but i reckon it's very good. It's 100% smoke-free yerba.īy the look of the front of the boxes of Sinceridad Organica and Pampa Organica and that they feature the same picture too, that they are probably same-same.) I am on my second 500 g bag of it, i use it in blends. The Kraus website does not give a clue as to why this is. Kraus Organic Gourmet has "Wine and Mate" printed on the front of the box. I checked the Kraus website and see how Kraus Organic Gourmet yerba is only available in ARGENTINA and the EU. On the side of the bag of Kraus Gaucho, i read in Spanish that it's produced without chemical fertilizers and pesticides. It's not certified organic but someone at Kraus replied to my emailed inquiry and stated that the Gaucho yerba comes from same fields as the rest of their yerbas. Kraus Gaucho i like it seems to be a combo 2/3 the Traditional with 1/3 the Pure Leaf. Kraus Organica Pure Leaf is not aged long at all if at all' this i say by comparing it to Mate Factor Pure Leaf which tastes unaged. Perhaps somehow, while getting shipped to Europe those bags got tainted. I can't relate to Kraus yerba ever tasting like algae or having ""a lightly chemical "rubbery" taste"": i'm in Hawaii. i have gotten a bag of their Pure Leaf and 3 bags of their Gaucho. I have gotten many bags of Kraus Organic Traditional and experienced a difference in taste in the latest batch, before it was good, now it's really good. Like tajarhina said, the taste of Kraus Organic Traditional may vary some from batch to batch. I am really looking forward to purchasing and trying some La Esquina de las Flores Organica Suave / Smooth.Īnd i like Kraus Organic Traditional (it is well-aged and as all Kraus yerbas,100% smoke-free.) The drying process is carried out by a system that has hot air flow produced by the indirect heat of a boiler, in this way a smoke-free product, with a mild flavor and delicate aroma is obtained.” And the Quality Department of La Esquina de las Flores responded : “As stated on the label of our Yerba Mate, it is certified organic. I emailed La Esquina de las Flores [ and asked if their Strong yerba mate is an “unsmoked” yerba, 100% smoke free, that is, never touched smoke during the zapecado and secado/drying process. I inquired and got the reply from the owner: "Quiquemann yerba mate is not exposed to smoke at any point in the process.” MyMateWorld is where i buy it from.īut i really also like La Esquina de las Flores Organica Fuerte / Strong it's really good, too. Quiquemann yerba might be my second favorite. I know of some other 100% smoke-free yerba mates.
